We report on the large solar energetic particle (SEP) events of solar cycle 24 in comparison with the similar epoch in cycle 23. We find major differences in terms of all space weather events: SEPs, geomagnetic storms, and interplanetary shocks. The space weather events seem to reflect the overall weakness of solar cycle 24. Dearth of ground level enhancement (GLE) events and large geomagnetic storms during cycle 24 clearly standout.
